Renovation of the lighting at SAIPEM France's head office
SAIPEM in France is one of the SAIPEM Group's largest engineering, project execution, offshore and onshore technological development companies. Located 30 kilometres from Paris, SAIPEM's offices are divided between a reception area and 6 floors, and accommodate 2,000 employees. The building, which was constructed in 2001, had indirect lighting using two 55W compact fluorescent tubes, which were switched on continuously from 6am to 9pm. To meet the energy consumption reduction targets set by French legislation, the company decided to replace the lighting at the end of 2021.
Following recommendations made by Bouygues Energies & Services, which was responsible for the building's works and maintenance, David Halluin - Head of General Services at SAIPEM France - chose Sylvania's eco-efficient LED luminaires combined with the SylSmart Connected lighting management solution.
An initial target of 75% energy savings in winter
Sylvania carried out an energy audit of the existing lighting systems, their costs and the regulations to be complied with (end of fluorescent tubes on 1 September 2023). This audit was followed by a lighting study carried out by Sylvania's design office, which recommended the following replacements:
- the warm white (3000 K) panels with the eco-responsible OPTICLIP luminaire with replaceable LED modules, combined with the SylSmart Connected lighting management solution,
- the 26W compact fluorescent spotlights in the circulation areas with the ASCENT 100 II decorative downlight.
To assess the effectiveness of these recommendations and ensure that they met the needs of SAIPEM France, 8 OPTICLIP luminaires with dual detection (presence sensor and natural light sensor) were first installed for 6 months in an office. Following the convincing results, all the luminaires in wings A and B on the 4th floor were replaced.
Combining high luminous efficacy (122 lm/W) with a low glare level (UGR<17), 230 OPTICLIP in neutral white (4000 K) were installed in the offices, meeting rooms and comfort zones. A further 105 Ascent 100 II downlights were installed in the circulation areas.
Throughout the project, Sylvania supported Bouygues Energies & Services in deploying the SylSmart Connected system by configuring the lighting zones and scenes off-site, as well as setting the parameters for the luminaires. The mobile application can be used to adjust certain settings if necessary.
Economies beyond expectations
4 energy meters installed on the site made it possible to compare the results between October 2021 and October 2022. Consumption was 5,092 kWh in October 2021 before the lighting renovation. In October 2022, it had fallen to 410 kWh, "which represents more than 80% energy savings over 1 year, well beyond our expectations thanks to the reaction of the double detection system, which we were unable to measure before", explains the customer.
Sylvania's audit proved to be relevant. The energy savings were immediate.
